My gf did this a few months ago - she started with a low-end
Dell Vostro box (the slimline 200, in her case, for £199) and then
added a load of options (most notably, the higher quality 22"
monitor) until she got up to just over 500 pounds including VAT. It
seems like a good machine so far.
@constantine I don't
like laptops, don't ask me why. I do want one of those subnote
thingys too so recomendations there would be good too. The Acer
Aspire One looks a good option.
@munkimatt: Show me any
OS making use of DualCPU now, forget Quad. Quad cores will be cheap
as chips in 2 years time, and will still be underused. Waste of
money IMO.
mac mini is cute. and it grows. if you have a spare monitor
lurking in the corner, i would def. go for it. and get an eee or
something akin for the road.
@abul is right here I think,
it's like 64bit processors, people go on about them but hardly any
current software actually makes any real use of them. Unless you're
rendering terraflops of CGI (yes that's a real word honest) or
analysing DNA structure at home forget it. Spend the cash somewhere
else :)
Wow 3 cheers for @abul then
everyone is in agreement, is this the scene at the end of the film
where we carry him out of the building shoulder high and he throws
his hat in the air in a freeze frame? :D
Yeah I like ASUS and these new boards with the embedded
SplashTop OS look sweet. It boots instantly and has firefox and
skype but you can still boot your normal OS. It's Linux of course
;)
I seriously wouldn't bother building your own PC these days, not
at the low-end. Dell buy the components in such bulk that they can
buy them AND assemble them AND ship it to you AND guarantee it for
probably less than you can buy the bits. And how much is your time
worth, how long will it take to source the components, order them
all and assemble them into a PC?

@overpills well it's the only Mac under £600 and who uses Windows these days?

@dan I have Ubuntu installed too, I just know how windows works and can't really be arsed starting again.

@munkimatt: All you need is a decent Core2Duo processor, graphics card and big HD. Other things are relative.
2 months, 1 week ago by adonisdemon.
@abul, not a quad? which Core2Duos are decent. I wouldn't mind a new motherboard so I can SLI graphics cards in the future.

Ok so we've settled on a Core2Duo. Now I need a motherboard to go with.

@abul - Oh yeah I know I wasn't being sarcastic about your PC knowledge, I'm sure you know more than me. Just found that image quite funny :)

@munkimatt: I'd recommend http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ use them often, and they've got a good forum too.

@abul - Well, I make no promises sorry but we'll have to see what we can do :)

That said, ASUS++ :)

@dennymeta: BUT that's the fun, bit! Besides I like to know how MY pc is configured, it's easier to diagnose problems when they occur.
2 months, 1 week ago by adonisdemon.
I don't have enough spare time for that kind of fun any more. YMMV.
I did miss that the original post said 'components' though, so that would seem to be the objective. shuts up :)
